Don’t Take Chances Around an Active Nest

A few wasps gathering around flowers may be part of a healthy outdoor environment. However, repeated activity around an entryway, patio, play area or opening in the home may indicate a nearby nest that requires attention.

Disturbing an active nest can cause social wasps to defend it, potentially resulting in multiple stings. Happy Earth begins by identifying the wasp, locating the nest and evaluating its proximity to people and pets before recommending an appropriate treatment plan.

Common Wasps in Central Texas

Paper Wasps

Paper wasps construct open, umbrella-shaped nests beneath eaves, porch ceilings, railings and other sheltered surfaces. They may defend the nest when people or pets get too close.

Yellowjackets

Yellowjackets are social wasps that often nest underground, but they may also establish colonies inside wall voids or other concealed spaces. They can become defensive when their nest is disturbed.

Mud Daubers

Mud daubers are solitary wasps that build narrow mud nests on walls, ceilings and sheltered exterior surfaces. They are generally less defensive than social wasps but may become a nuisance when nests accumulate around a property.

Cicada Killers

Cicada killers are large, solitary wasps that dig burrows in lawns and areas of exposed soil. Their size can be intimidating, but they are generally less aggressive away from their nesting areas.

HOW IT WORKS

A Smarter Approach
To Wasp Control

1

Inspect

We identify the type of wasp, locate visible or concealed nesting areas and evaluate the level of activity around the property.

2

Treat

We apply a focused treatment based on the species, nest location and potential risk to people and pets.

3

Protect

We identify openings, sheltered surfaces and other conditions that may encourage wasps to build nests near frequently used areas.

Signs You May Have a Wasp Problem

  • Wasps repeatedly entering the same hole or structural opening
  • An open-comb nest beneath an eave, railing or porch ceiling
  • A paper-covered nest in a tree, shrub or protected area
  • Wasps entering a hole in the lawn or exposed soil
  • Mud nests attached to walls, ceilings or exterior surfaces
  • Buzzing or movement coming from inside a wall or attic
  • Heavy activity around trash cans, outdoor food or drinks

Why Do Wasps Keep Coming Back?

Homes provide many protected places for wasps to build nests, including eaves, rooflines, vents, wall openings, sheds and covered patios. Food, water, flowering plants and nearby insect activity can also make a property attractive to foraging wasps.

Removing a visible nest may not address concealed activity or the conditions that encouraged nesting. Professional wasp control focuses on correct identification, appropriate treatment and practical prevention recommendations. Never seal an opening while an active nest may still be inside the structure.
